Mitch and Kat were introduced freshman year of college by mutual friend (and bridesmaid) Mary Walters. They hit it off and had a fun weekend together in Waukesha. When Mary and Mitch went back to LaCrosse, and Kat went back to Madison, they didnt expect to see each other again.
A full year later, for spring break, Kat and her friend Amanda agreed to ride to South Padre Island with some guys from Amandas hometown. When they arrived at the meeting point, Kat was completely shocked to see Mitch waiting in the car. They were both super excited to see a familiar face, but had no idea how compatible they were. Spending 24 hours in a tiny car together proved to them that it was impossible to run out of things to talk about. They enjoyed each others company very much.
Mitch and Kat stayed very close friends even though they went to separate colleges and eventually lived in different states. Their main form of communication was (and continues to be) through an app called Voxer. It's essentially a walkie talkie. They would spend hours every day talking through this app for YEARS. In fact, the last time they went a day without talking on Voxer was in 2020. Their streak has continued on since then.
In 2021, Kat decided it was time to move to a bigger city. She considered moving to Chicago or Milwaukee, but ultimately decided to move to Minneapolis because she was excited to spend time with her friends in that city. It was the best decision she's ever made. Mitch put in a lot of effort to make Kat feel welcome in the city, and to show her around. Their friendship quickly developed into what felt more like a romantic relationship, but neither one of them wanted to admit it out of fear of changing the friendship. They could not get enough of each other. When they finally admitted to having feelings for each other, they could tell it was about to be a once in a lifetime relationship. They had both fallen in love with their best friend.
On March 3rd, 2024, Mitch proposed to Kat in Stillwater, MN. A few days prior, he called Kat and said he was on his way to pick up something from Facebook Marketplace in Stillwater. He apologized for not inviting Kat to join for the ride, since she loves Stillwater so much, and he promised to take her on a date there soon. On Sunday, he asked her if she'd like to spend the day there. She very excitedly said yes and wore her favorite dress for their date. It was a beautiful 70 degree day, and the two of them spent the afternoon walking by the river, exploring the antique mall, sipping wine on an outdoor patio, and enjoying each other's company. Kat wondered if there was a chance he might propose, only because the day was so romantic and she thought would have been a perfect time for him to do it. She (not so subtly) felt his pockets for a ring box and felt nothing in there, so she put it out of her mind. The sun started to set and Mitch asked if Kat wanted to climb the bluff that lead to the scenic overview of the town. They walked around the beautiful neighborhood at the top of the bluff and held hands as they walked towards the overlook. As they approached the beautiful view, Mitch started walking a bit slower, so Kat turned around to wait for him. He was on one knee. He could only mutter "Kat" before she tackled him to the ground out of pure excitement. He had gone to Stillwater days before not to pick something up from Facebook Marketplace, but to find the perfect spot to propose. His brother and sister-in-law had strategically placed a picnic basket full of blankets and a bottle of champagne on the grass nearby so Kat and Mitch could sit together and celebrate the amazing moment. It was the absolute best proposal of all time.
